Something that I absolutely love to do is read. There is so much power in reading and when you find the right book, it can have a huge impact on your life.
When I was building my business, I would go to the library, and would always head straight for the mindset books. I wanted to grow my business and I knew I was getting in my own way. The things that seemed so easy for other people to do were difficult for me.
I have read some books that have been absolutely pivotal in my life, and I want to share them with you.
Total Money Makeover Dave Ramsey
At the time, this book was pivotal for me because both Tom and I were self-employed and neither one of us had a steady income. The book was all about knowing your budget, your daily spending, and knowing where your money is going. And I was really big on not spending money at the time on anything that wasn’t necessary. So, because it was budget focused and we didn’t have that steady income, I felt this one was an important one to read.
Unshakeable by Tony Robbins
I then happened to find Unshakeable, and I hadn’t read any of Tony Robbins’ books, but he’s so motivational that I wanted to pick this one up. One of the biggest things that we took away from this book was to not be afraid of bear market. There’s this stigma that everyone is afraid of them and everyone tries to pull their money out, but that’s what causes the market to crash. This book especially hit Tom, because when everyone was pulling money out, he decided to put money in and invest.
Profit First by Mike Michalowicz
This is a great book to understand where your money is going and where it’s coming from. It talks about putting your spending into categories, making sure you’re saving for taxes, and making sure you have enough money for operating expenses. Because of Profit First, we were able to have our budget dialed in and we felt really good about it.
You Are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero
Something that’s great about this book is that she has you go back to your money mindset story. She has you think about what you learned about money when you were growing up. And in the book, she mentions how wanting to make more money can feel greedy, but then turns around and makes you think about all of the good things you can do with money.
I mean, really think about all of the good things that have come from money. Money can really magnify a person’s personality. If you’re a good person and you’re blessed with a lot of money, you’re going to do good things and help others.
You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness by Jen Sincero
This is another book by Jen Sincero that has made a big impact for me. She went into detail about how she went from wanting to start a business, saying that she was a coach. Then had to put herself out there as a writer, and she felt so cringy and embarrassed about it.
These are things we all feel when we’re trying something new. It’s something we’ve never done before, so it can feel scary and uncomfortable. So, she talks about where she was, where she is now, and how she got there.
She recognized it was going to be uncomfortable, but if you stay in your comfort zone, you are going to be stuck right where you are. It’s easier to stay in your comfort zone than stick your neck out a bit and risk some embarrassment and failure.
But these things are only scary for a moment. If you haven’t heard about the 7 seconds of courage, it’s about having something that feels intimidating, but you just think about the step that you’re at, and just take a few seconds to make that decision to do it.
Worthy by Jamie Kern Lima by Jamie Kern Lima
This book is all about your self-confidence vs. your self-worth. A lot of people work on their self-confidence, put themselves out there, grow, build their teams. And from the outside, they look really confident. While that might be good enough for some, there are others who build their confidence on the outside, but never really build the self-worth. They never really believe they’re worthy of what they’re earning or believe that they have value to give.
When you can build that self-worth, it can really take you to a different level. Where you are both confident and feel like you’re worth it.
Final Thoughts
So, these are the most influential books that have stuck with me and the ones I want to go back to. I truly believe that anyone who wants to grow and has a desire to get to a different point than where they are should be reading. It’s not only the power of books, but it’s the power of the right book in the right hands. Then, you get to decide what you want to do with it, what you want to get out of it, and how you want to implement it.
If there are books you’ve read that have changed your life, I’d love for you to share them with me. Feel free to send me a DM in Instagram @stacymusgrave. I’m always looking for new books to read!
