Oftentimes, we find ourselves stuck in this idea of what life “should” look like, which includes going to college and getting a stable job. But here’s the thing: that script doesn’t fit everyone, and while it can be scary to step off of that path, it may be exactly what we need to bring us true fulfillment and joy.
In this first episode of Intentional, my husband Tom and I are sharing our own journey of how we ditched that path. We left our jobs to start businesses, left our hometown in Pennsylvania, and made the big move to move all the way across the country to Colorado because we knew there was something more for us. We talk about embracing change, leaning into supportive relationships, and the importance of living with intention.
The beginning – Living our lives in Pennsylvania
Both Tom and I are from Pennsylvania. Tom went to school to become an electrician but eventually decided to start his own business. While he was growing his business, I was looking for a full-time teaching job.
Well, I didn’t get the job, which was heartbreaking at the time, but truly a blessing in disguise. Once we had our firstborn, Hadley, I decided to stay home and start my photography business. While I loved the work I was doing and building confidence in so many women, I still felt like there was something more out there.
Making the decision to move to Colorado
Everything changed in April of last year when I was at a yoga retreat in Arizona, and I remember seeing the mountains and thinking that I would love to live there. I felt so connected there. And when I came back and told Tom, he just looked at me and said, “What if we do move?”
This was a chance for us to live intentionally. To live a life that filled us with a ton of joy. So, we held onto the vision, sold our house, and moved out to Colorado. And while we don’t know if this is going to be our forever home, we couldn’t be happier about the decision we made.
There’s so much we’ve done in our lives, and I’m proud of the fact that we have found that if we’re staying in something and it’s not feeling good, then it’s time to change it.
The power of taking inspired action
Would it have been easier to stay in Pennsylvania? Of course! But we wouldn’t have been truly happy. If you work from a place of inspired action, you can get so much more done. You can talk yourself into what you need to do rather than talking yourself out of it.
It takes being intentional, making sure you’re paying attention to your everyday life, and asking if what you’re doing is going to get you to the goal that you want. By taking these leaps of faith, it’s possible to create a life that reflects who you are and what you love.
