THE PODCAST | 1:1 COACHING | INSTAGRAM

What would your business look like if you stopped trying to fit into someone else’s box and started fully embracing your unique approach? This is a large part of a conversation I had with Emily Mathis as I coached her through her journey of embracing her unique approach to business and content creation. We talk about authenticity, neurodivergence, and having the courage to show up differently in the online space than we’re often told.

Reframing “Different” as an Asset

Early on in our conversation, Emily shared her journey of understanding and appreciating her “chaotic” and “scattered” thinking patterns. Instead of viewing these traits as flaws, she reframed them as valuable assets. Her ability to connect information from diverse sources — from college lectures to online business insights — allows her to serve clients in uniquely powerful ways.

The Pressure to Conform

We discussed the pressure many business owners feel to conform to standard online business practices. The demand for short-form content, the need to stick to specific niches, the expectation to show up in certain ways, and the pressure to create consistent, structured content often lead to feelings of restriction and inauthenticity. These “rules” can create unnecessary barriers to authentic connection and sustainable business growth.

Finding New Avenues of Expression

A key takeaway Emily got from our conversation was the importance of choosing content formats that align with your natural communication style. For Emily, this meant leaning into long-form content rather than short clips. It even meant launching a podcast, which has been on her mind for a long time. Choosing to do this shows that it’s important to lean into what feels right for you rather than forcing yourself to do something that’s uncomfortable just because that’s what others do.

Creating structures to foster accountability

We also dove into what Emily can commit to that feels good for her. Along with launching her podcast, she decided that she would start doing Instagram Lives. While picking a certain day and time doesn’t work for her, she can commit to 2 days a week. This commitment feels achievable for her and will set her up for sustainable growth.

Final Thoughts

Showing up differently requires courage, but it also opens the door to deeper connections and more meaningful work. This conversation is a powerful reminder that business success doesn’t come from fitting into a norm that isn’t authentic to you. It comes from embracing your unique qualities, finding your authentic voice, and creating structures that support your natural way of working.
