As we embrace the new year, many of us find ourselves setting new goals and envisioning a fresh start. However, one thing that tends to be overlooked is not just what we want to achieve, but more importantly, who we choose to be in this new year. 

As I reflect on the past year and look forward to the year ahead, I know that if we were to show up confidently in every area of our lives, so many things would shift for us. And the thing about confidence is that we don’t always have it in the moment. It’s created along the way. It’s created by doing, by taking steps in the right direction to make decisions that are in line with the person you are and where you’re going. 

One experience of how I gained confidence

A personal example of this is when I went to an event earlier in 2024 called “Moms on the Mic.” I found out there were 2 open mic spots that were going to be 5 minutes each. At first, I was hesitant about doing it. What would I even have to say? Would people find any value? However, I ended up choosing to say yes. Saying yes was me starting to shift my confidence. And once I did it, I was so proud of myself. It taught me that our self-assurance often grows as we confront self-doubt head-on and engage in situations that are presented to us. 

Practical steps to building confidence 

How can you ensure that this year is one where you show up more confidently? Start by asking yourself where you want to show up more confidently and more powerfully. Is it in your work? How about in relationships? Is it in your health? Once you get clear on that, then you need to figure out what it would look like to show up more confidently in that area. Visualize what confident actions would look like in those spaces and come at it from a place of learning. 

Starting small 

Building confidence comes from doing, which is a catch-22. In order to build confidence, we have to do the things we don’t feel confident doing. So, start really small. Go with the smallest commitment you can create that starts to become belief in yourself. Whether it’s taking an extra walk or committing to a new health plan, honoring these commitments will help to build self-belief. Also, be mindful of the negative self-talk and replace it with affirmations that will support your growth and self-assurance. 

If this is challenging, that’s okay! You can always bring in accountability if you need to whether it’s a coach, a friend, or an accountability partner. More than likely, they are going to notice things you don’t see in yourself and can help you stay motivated. 

Celebrate the small wins 

We get so caught up in what everyone else is doing that we forget to look at what we have accomplished, even if it’s something small. Find one thing to celebrate at the end of every single day, no matter how small it is, because that will start to shift things in your life. 

Final thoughts 

Confidence is something that can be shaken so easily, but can albo build easily. It’s through consistency and celebrating along the way and making sure you’re showing up as the person you want to be. And it comes from taking action. So, as you look at the year ahead, get clear on how you want to show up in the world and how you’re being. If it’s not in alignment with what you’re doing right now, then make some small shifts because you get to decide how you’re being in every situation.
