THE PODCAST | 1:1 COACHING | INSTAGRAM
As a coach, I love sharing real, raw moments of what coaching actually looks like. Today, I want to take you behind the scenes of a powerful coaching session with my client Brooklyn, who is navigating the delicate process of pivoting from photography to coaching while maintaining both businesses.
The Challenge of Pivoting and New Beginnings
When we start our session, Brooklyn shares how she’s feeling the familiar uncertainty that comes with pivoting into a new role. Even though she’s experienced in what she does, stepping into coaching has brought up old blocks around money and self-worth. It’s a reminder that no matter how successful we are in one arena, beginning something new often takes us back to those early challenging emotions.
The Pressure to Create the “Perfect” Offer
Brooklyn came to our session feeling pressure to create a comprehensive photography course for beginners. She had potential clients in her inbox asking about camera basics, and her initial instinct was to create a full course to meet this need. This is something I see often when entrepreneurs are pivoting – we want to say yes to every opportunity, create everything at once, and make it all perfect.
Uncovering What Really Matters
Through our conversation, we discovered something crucial: while Brooklyn could teach camera basics, what really lit her up was helping photographers build successful businesses. She realized she was putting pressure on herself to create an offer that wasn’t fully aligned with her zone of genius and long-term vision.
The Power of Permission to Focus
One of the most powerful moments in our session was when Brooklyn gave herself permission to:
- Focus on her upcoming retreat
- Be present with her homeschooling journey
- Support her family during harvest season
- Create offers that truly excited her
Finding the Right Next Step
Instead of creating a comprehensive course for absolute beginners, we explored the idea of a focused mentorship program for photographers ready to start their businesses. This aligned perfectly with Brooklyn’s experience of building a successful photography business while balancing family life and other commitments.
The Importance of Timing When Pivoting
A key lesson from our session was that just because there’s market demand doesn’t mean we need to meet it immediately. When pivoting, it’s crucial to:
- Honor your current commitments and energy levels
- Choose offers that align with your expertise and passion
- Create space for your own growth and development
- Trust that the right clients will still be there when you’re ready
Moving Forward with Clarity
By the end of our session, Brooklyn had clarity about her next steps. Instead of rushing to create a comprehensive course, she decided to focus on a smaller, more intimate mentorship program that would allow her to serve clients while continuing to develop her coaching skills.
This is what I love about coaching – sometimes we come in thinking we need to do one thing, but through conversation and exploration, we discover what truly feels aligned. When pivoting in business, it’s not just about what we could do, but what we should do in this season of our lives.
Remember, pivoting doesn’t mean you have to abandon everything you’ve built or say yes to every opportunity. It’s about making intentional choices that honor both where you are and where you want to go.
